TWO LINE SPRAY PORTRAITS
Recently, at an opening of one of my shows, a curator said to me; "Ed, I like your work, I just don't know where to put it." I took that to mean that he didn't know how to categorize it, where it fit within his institutional or academic constraints. He went on to say that he found the work vexing and that they shouldn't work but they do.
I've thought about what he said a lot. He came to the painting with a preconception of what a painting should be, what painting has been.
His statements reminded me of the oh so many times a less educated viewer has said: What does it mean? or I don't get it, what is it? They too came to the work expecting it to fit into their narrow view.
Below are four of twelve at this size along with three close ups. I'll add more once I clean up and edit some bad shots. Right now, this gets the point across.
In addition to these paintings there are drawings at a variety of sizes.
These are smart paintings that are fun to stand in front of. Sometimes, that should be enough!
