And another thing!
In addition to an artist statement, here are a collection of observations, thoughts and conclusions. There is no real order to these, They are here simply to give you a clearer idea of why I do, think and make the way I do.
-Professional Isolation has allowed me a certain independence...
-Forming my own views
-There are mistakes in what we are told and how we are taught about painting. There are still new ways to approach how and why to make a painting.
-I have developed a distinctive point of view about painting based on decades of study and practice.
-It has occured to me that simply acting on a new idea and moving away from previous thinking is seen by others as inconsistent rather than growth or evolvement.
-If you don't consider the audience when you're making a painting, then you've forgotten what painting is.
- I prefer the object over discourse.
-Ideas about how to or why to make a painting should never be fixed. They should be allowed to flow and evolve, often times away from previous convictions. Those past convictions are still significant and they are there for you to come back to if you see fit but to play it safe, because of comfort or fear and ignore a new curiosity ... scarry... even though you're not sure where its headed ...dont play it safe...
-A problem in our culture is
-I cant say what I want to say exclusively in one seri
-Trusting my gut, personal experience, skill and observations over some intellectual decree about painting has never let me down.
-I'm not guided by others, although admittedly, there are times where I have found it necessary to readjust my thinking because of something someone has said.
-Art making, being an artist has become for too, too many, a business, a career.
-I go years without having conversations with other artists about art.
-Painting has been pronounced dead more time than I care to think. We've described it
-Phoney artists don't smile. Its a defence mechanism and a bullying tactic.
I don't dismantle painting and I revere its history. I do break it down somewhat but like all things, taking things to their extreme rarely benefit anyone or anything. Often times you destroy that which you are trying to describe.
